Amid Security Leak Probe, Netanyahu’s Office Under Scrutiny: Suspects Arrested as Sensitive Intel Exposed

In a high-profile investigation now known as the “security affair,” multiple suspects have been detained in connection with an alleged leak of classified documents from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, a matter potentially impacting Israel’s national security and its strategic goals in Gaza.

Judge Menachem Mizrahi of the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court confirmed the arrests on Friday, noting the suspected breach threatened “sensitive intelligence sources” and impeded Israel’s operational goals amid the Gaza conflict.

Judge Mizrahi authorized a partial lifting of the gag order on the case, revealing that the Shin Bet, Israel Police, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched the “open phase” of their investigation into the suspected leak of information from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

A Leak with Serious Consequences

Amid Security Leak Probe, Netanyahu’s Office Under Scrutiny The leaked information reportedly impacted a high-stakes negotiation over hostages held by Hamas, as reported by Channel 12. The investigation suggests that suspects selectively leaked or even distorted documents originating from Hamas documents obtained by the IDF that outlined the terror group’s approach to hostage negotiations.

The sensitive information was allegedly filtered to foreign outlets such as Bild and The Jewish Chronicle, mirroring statements made by Netanyahu in press briefings just prior to the leaks.

The information included intelligence indicating Hamas’s intention to move Israeli hostages through the Philadelphi Corridor between Gaza and Egypt.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office issued a statement denying the arrest of any formal staff members; however, close sources reported that some of the suspects held informally advisory roles in Netanyahu’s inner circle.

One detained individual, identified only through partially blurred images released by Channel 12, reportedly advised the prime minister over the past year and a half, and, according to sources close to him, played a key role in daily meetings and confidential discussions.

Political Complications and Internal Divisions

The investigation has led to allegations that Netanyahu’s office may have misled the public regarding the detainees’ connection to the prime minister. Channel 12 aired images showing one suspect with Netanyahu and several government officials, contradicting statements that downplayed any relationship.

This individual, described as a confidant by an inside source, was reportedly part of all high-level discussions, joined the prime minister’s convoy during critical engagements, and frequently handled sensitive assignments.

A close associate expressed frustration, stating, “Netanyahu threw him under the bus once the scandal surfaced,” and remarked on the personal loyalty displayed by the advisor throughout his tenure.

The situation has added to existing tensions within Israel’s government. According to reports, Netanyahu’s added conditions to a proposed hostage deal, demanding an Israeli military presence along the Egypt-Gaza border, led to disagreements with Israel’s security establishment. Many saw the additional requirements as obstructive, though the prime minister garnered support from his far-right coalition partners, who argued against what they saw as concessions to Hamas.

Political Fallout and Ongoing Investigation

As investigations continue, Netanyahu’s political standing remains under scrutiny, with analysts and opposition figures questioning the implications of the leak. The controversy comes at a critical juncture, as Israel seeks a resolution to the Gaza conflict and faces international pressure to secure the safe return of hostages.

The probe’s outcomes could impact not only the inner workings of the PMO but also Israel’s wider security and diplomatic strategies. Observers are closely watching to see whether the inquiry will prompt further political backlash or potential changes in Israel’s approach to Gaza as the investigation into this high-stakes breach of security unfolds.
