The Egyptian Cabinet issued a new statement addressing recent rumors about alleged plans to evacuate the historic Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, amidst ongoing development in the area.
" Reports had suggested that South Sinai Governorate intended to reclaim the monastery’s land, supposedly aiming to evict the monks, including the Greek custodians overseeing the site.
Denying these claims, the Information Center affirmed that “Saint Catherine's Monastery remains open and operational, with all management and responsibilities continuing as usual for its priests and monks, without any plans for evacuation.”
The statement highlighted an ongoing partnership with the monastery to support efforts preserving its religious and cultural heritage, recognizing the site’s historical and religious significance. Additionally, the Cabinet emphasized the development of the Saint Catherine area to present this sacred site in its best light, enhancing its value as a global tourist attraction.
Built in 548 AD and under Greek Orthodox supervision, Saint Catherine’s Monastery has recently been the subject of rumors suggesting legal action aimed at reclaiming land and expelling the monks. In response, South Sinai officials confirmed regular communication and meetings between the governor, monastery officials, and the Greek ambassador, underscoring their commitment to supporting the monastery and preserving all archaeological and religious landmarks.
