A disturbing incident recently occurred at a Cairo hospital where citizens attacked medical staff over the care of a family member receiving critical treatment for a stroke in the ICU.
The altercation began as the patient was undergoing necessary intensive care treatment. Family members grew frustrated due to delays in some medical services, which led to escalating tension.
This eventually resulted in a verbal assault on the medical team, which quickly turned physical, involving damage to essential medical equipment in the ICU.
In collaboration with security agencies, the Ministry announced plans to implement more robust security measures in critical hospital areas, including emergency and intensive care units, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar also emphasized plans to review and update legal penalties related to assaults on medical personnel, along with introducing new protocols to secure the safety of doctors and nurses.
In response, the Egyptian Medical Syndicate visited the hospital to check on the injured doctor, offering psychological and legal support and filing an official complaint to ensure proper legal documentation of the assault.
The Syndicate’s president also called for stricter enforcement and tougher penalties for attacks on healthcare workers, proposing that such crimes be made non-negotiable to provide a stronger deterrent and safeguard the medical community.
